Plot Synopsis for The Lord of the Rings Series on Amazon Prime

Although it was announced years ago, Amazon has been rather tight-lipped about their billion-dollar The Lord of the Rings series for Amazon Prime. However, thanks to an exclusive from theonering.net, we have the first plot synopsis for the series. What we know about the show so far is that it will be at least a five-season series and that the first two episodes are already in post-production under the direction of J.A. Bayona, director of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. The full show is slated to start production soon. Without further ado here is the official plot synopsis for #LOTRonPrime:

"Amazon Studios’ forthcoming series brings to screens for the very first time the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth’s history. This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness. Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of NĂºmenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone."

The reason why this information got out was that a few weeks ago some plot details were shared with the team at theonering.net that seemed a bit too official to simply be a rumor. Unsure of what to do with the knowledge, the team reached out through mutual connections to verify the information. After waiting a few weeks to validate the synopsis, they have finally released it to the public. There is no exact time frame on when the series will premiere. Check out theonering.net for the latest information on everything The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

To share my personal opinion, considering that the series is effectively a prequel, it'll be interesting to see what character they pick as the heart of the show. From what little Amazon has revealed in the past, we know that the show is set in the Second Age of Middle-Earth, meaning that the story could follow Annatar (Sauron using a different name) and his manipulation of the Elves into creating the Rings of Power. Having just recently watched the extended editions of all six films last month, I have Tolkein's elaborate world still fresh in my mind, and given these plot details, I am even more excited for the future of Amazon's ambitious and expensive project.
