State of Play Overview | April 2021

To end off the month, PlayStation released a roughly 15 minute State of Play today to talk about some upcoming games. While it was mainly advertised to be about Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, the digital showcase also had a few surprises.

Starting off with Subnautica: Below Zero, the all-new game from Unknown Worlds, set one year after the events of the first Subnautica. As you search for your sister, one of the members of the previous research crew, you will walk through snow-covered terrain and dive into frigid waters. Just like Subnautica, crafting and survival are at the core of Below Zero. And thanks to the DualSense controller, there are added haptic feedback functions to further immerse you into the game. On the PlayStation 5, Below Zero can be played in 4K with a target of 60fps when in Performance Mode. As a bonus, players who own the physical or digital version of the first Subnautica on PS4, can upgrade to the digital PS5 version for free. Subnautica: Below Zero releases on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 on May 14.

After a huge resurgence in 2020, the 2018 multiplayer game Among Ass, er sorry, Among Us, is finally making its way onto consoles. Last month it was revealed that it would be releasing on Xbox systems sometime in 2021 and now we have confirmation that it will be releasing on the PS4 and PS5 as well. That's not all, however, because players who buy Among Us on PlayStation will also get an exclusive Ratchet & Clank skin and pet to use in the game. There is no exact date yet on when that will be.

Then it was time for the main show, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart from Insomniac Games. Rift Apart is a standalone Ratchet & Clank game that follows Ratchet, Clank, and (the new character) Rivet. With Ratchet and Clank separated in a new dimension, they must try to reunite while traversing the sprawling and lively Nefarious City. And to help with traversal, Ratchet can now dash and wall run for increased mobility. While playing through Rift Apart, players will come across dimensional tears that allow them to use the Rift Teather to essentially teleport to that location. There are also Pocket Dimensions that work similarly. Just like Below Zero, Rift Apart takes advantage of the DualSense controller's adaptive triggers and haptic feedback to create a different feel for each of the game's weapons. And because of the PS5's super-fast SSD, entire levels can instantly load up in the middle of a boss fight without any delay. It's no surprise to anyone that played the 2016 Ratchet & Clank game that Rift Apart looks gorgeous and plays super smooth. One small, but important, note that was made at the end was that Rift Apart will launch with lots of Accessibility Features to cater to many different players. Even more so now with the increased power of the PlayStation 5. From Dimensional Clank puzzles to Blitz Challenges, there will be a lot to do in Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart when it comes out on June 11.
